Meeting in Bulgaria. Review, compilation,
presentation and evaluation of the work done so far. Planning new Tasks. - |
Wednesday, April 27th.
Arrival at Sofia airport. Transport from the the airport to Karlovo. Arrival at SOU
“Ivan Vazov”, Sopot and meeting with the students´ families.
Accommodation at “Shterev” Hotel, Karlovo.
Thursday, April 28th.
09:00 Welcome to SOU “Ivan Vazov”, Sopot.
We were welcomed by the Headmistress Ms Radostina and two student girls, dressed
in beautiful traditional costumes, who showed hospitality according to the traditional
Bulgarian custom, offering us a bread called pogacha and spicy salt. We took a small
piece of bread, dip into the salt and ate it.
In the school a group of girls danced typical dances with baskets filled with roses.
09:30 Tour of the school.
10:30 Work session:
There were some interviews for the local TV before the work session, and Iliya -
the Bulgarian school coordinator- explained the programme of the meeting and commented
some important events happened in Sopot, pointing out that it is the birth place
of the famous Bulgarian poet Ivan Vazov. After this, the schools started to present
the new activities done since the last meeting in Büyëkçekmece,
Turkey.
The Spanish school presented some posters done to celebrate the Comenius Week
and a Power Point to keep the very good memories we have of the meeting in Büyëkçekmece.
As coordinator school of the project Beyond Words, commented the work to be done
until the meeting in Salamanca, Spain, in June.
The Greek school presented a Power Point to show the celebration of the Open
Day at school, and the participation of the Comenius team in the European Teenage
Book Exhibition. Liana, the Greek school coordinator also explained the Educational
Drama Activity the students had performed about ‘FRIENDSHIP’: reflections and suggestions
about the topic (friendship is like a mirror…), meaning of friendship (love, support,
trust…). A really interesting teaching unit about the value of friendship. The last
activity presented was a video clip about ‘solidarity’ called ‘Qui est au bout du
fil?, a competition in French related to the relationship between Greek students
and Dutch students of the School RSG SLINGERBOS / LEVANT. The song the students prepared
about solidarity was really original.
The Turkish colleagues, Safiye and Funda, presented a very well done Power
Point about the topic of tolerance, showing symbols and places of peaceful coexistence
of Islam, Christianity and Judaism in Turkey.
The Italian colleague, Massimo, had prepared a superb video to present a new
teaching unit: Awareness of Beauty. The images to show beauty through the golden
triangle had been cleverly selected to understand the concept.
Riita, the Finnish colleague explained the last teaching unit her school had
prepared: The Golden Age of Finnish Art.
This is an activity about values (hope, love, stream of life… including ecological
values related to Nature.
The teaching unit included students’ paintings. It was amazing to watch how the students
interpreted or imitated the meaning of classic Finnish artworks communicating values
with their own paintings.
The Romanian school coordinator, Polixenia, presented a new teaching unit
‘Volunteering and its Art”. This activity included a Power Point to show volunteering
in the field of art. The pictures showing Romanian work of arts promoting this values
are very communicative.
The coordinator of the host school, Iliya, presented the last teaching unit
they have prepared: ‘PATRIOTISM, love and devotion to the country through humanism,
respect, gratitude and democracy.
This was a very interesting and educational activity in order to not confuse patriotism
and nationalism, and to show a quick review of the Bulgarian history. The Bulgarian
Comenius team had also prepared a teaching unit about traditions: ‘Calendars and
Holidays’.
In the evening, after the work sessions, we visited the poet Ivan Vazov’s house and
other interesting places in Sopot.
Friday, April 29th.
At 8:00 we were on the bus to Veliko Tarnovo, the Medieval capital of Bulgaria.
In the way to Veliko we visited the monumental church of Nativity in the town of
Shipka and Visit “Etara”, an ethnographic complex near the city of Gabrovo.
We crossed the region called ‘The Valley of Roses’, one of the biggest producers
of rose oil in the world. According to the information of our guide teacher, Krasimira,
The valley is famous for its rose-growing industry which has been cultivated there
for centuries, and which produces 85% of the world's rose oil.
Around 13:00 we were visiting the Tsarevets fortress in Veliko Tarnovo (XII-XIII
c.). This is a historic town located 250 km from Sofia and along the Yantra River;
the city was founded by the Thracians and during the heyday of the Bulgarian Empire
in the Middle Ages was the capital of the country.
Thanks to Neliyan, Iliya, Aneliya and Krasimira for being our guides during this
wonderful cultural trip to the heart of Bulgaria.
Saturday, April 30th.
A day in the Central Balkan National Park going to the top of the mountain – “Dobrila”
chalet, using the “Shambala” chair lift from Sopot.
At 9:30 teachers and students were taking the chair lift to the top of the mountain.
After a pleasant walk in the National Park, we were motivated to enjoy a typical
Bulgarian lunch at ‘Dobrila’ chalet. Everything was delicious: salads, roast lamb…
and desserts.
Thanks to Rodostina, Iliya, Krasimira, Neliyan and Boddan (the sport teacher at school
in charge of our physical security) for programming this awesome adventure of going
up to the top of the mountain by the chair lift: it was the first time in my life
and I dared to do it!
20:00 Time to have dinner at “Loven Park” restaurant in Karlovo.
The traditional Bulgarian things to eat were delicious, and music and dances created
so nice atmosphere that made everybody happy.
Sunday, May 1st
According to the scheduled, we visited the town of Plovdiv. Plovdiv is
the second-largest city in Bulgaria with a population of 331,796. Walking around
the Old Town we could appreciate well preserved historical buildings and places.
I loved to visit the Ancient Theatre (II c. AD.)
The Turkish, Italian and Spanish team said goodbye here to the group. It was time
to come back home keeping a lot of very good memories for ever. Thanks and congratulations
to the Bulgarian team for preparing this wonderful meeting in their homeland.

Sunday, 13th of February.
Arrival at the airport of Istanbul. Transport from the the airport to Büyükçekmece.
Arrival at ‘Emlak Konut Mimarsinan Anadolu Lisesi’ and meeting with the students’
families. Accommodation at the Artemis Marin Princess Hotel in Kumburgaz, Istanbul.
Monday, 14th of February
09:00 Welcome at school and greetings by the School Director.
After the welcoming, the coordinator of the partnership presented the evaluation
of the 1st year of the project commenting the results of a survey that had been previously
answered by the coordinators in each school. As a consequence of the analysis of
the results, all the participants agreed that the communication among the students
should be improved. In order to get this aim, a new list of the email addresses of
the students involved in the project will be done and sent to the coordinators in
each school. Coordinators and teachers involved in the project will encourage and
facilitate the communication among the students. Videoconferences and social networks,
like facebook, could be used to motivate the students to get in touch.
Presentation of the activities done by the Turkish school ‘EMLAK KONUT MIMARSINAN
LISESI’
Mr. Harum Resit Ünüvar, after presenting the recent History of Turkey,
showing its transformation in a modern country, explained the Turkish Educational
system. This presentation was supported by several videos that helped to understand
the changes operated in the country from 1922 until the present time. After lunch,
the other schools started to present and evaluate the work done since the last meeting
in Badia Polesine, Italy.
The Spanish school IESO QUERCUS, presented the new Teaching Units prepared
about the universal values of tolerance, friendship, labour, freedom and justice,
and also presented the logos created to publicise the project in the local community
during the open days at school.
The Greek school GYMNASIO EFKARPIAS, informed about the celebration of the
open day at school: information about the countries taking part in the project, presentation
of pictures, leaflets …
It was also presented the Teenager Books Exhibition that was prepared in the school.
During the exhibition, books from different countries were shown in order to reflect
on the likes and topics of European teenagers readings. Finally, a new teaching unit
about ‘friendship’ was presented, and also was shown the way this lesson was developed
with the students: brainstorms, short essays (e.g ‘talking to my friend’) drawing
a tree of friendship…
The Bulgarian school SREDNO OBSHTOOBRAZOVATELNO UCHILISHTE IVAN VAZOV presented
some folk tales, popular in the countries of the partnership, the students have read.
The reading of the tales was preceded by an explanation to place the tales in context.
The presentation about the use of caricatures to communicate values was very original,
and the video ‘Young Comments about Turkey’ was as nice as usual.
The Romanian school COLEGIUL NATIONAL PEDAGOGIC CONSTANTIN BRATESCU
presented a new teaching unit about ‘Equal rights in spiritual path in intercultural
Dobrudga’. The unit was part of ‘the week of diversity’, an activity done in the
school on the topic ‘different but equals’ that reflects on groups with difficult
ethnic backgrounds. The contribution of the Romanian school ended with a video about
the town of Constanta.
Tuesday, 15th of February
09:00 Meeting at school.
1. Before going on with the presentation of the work done, the coordinator of the
project encouraged the participating teachers to improve the communication among
the students of the involved schools. These were the agreements in order to improve
the communication among the students:
- To update the email list of the students involved in the project in each school.
- To organize videoconferences among the schools.
- To encourage the students to get in touch with each other regularly, especially
to celebrate seasonal festivals and holidays.
- To promote students’ exchange among the schools.
- To generalize the programme of mobility of students some schools are currently
developing.
The coordinator of the partnership encouraged the participants to prepare and write
contributions, both in the national language and in English, for the school magazine
of the project to be publicised in June. It was also reminded to prepare digital
files of no more than 20Mb to facilitate the uploading of the activities, materials
and products on the website and also the future recording on DVD's. Before going
on with the presentation of the work done, teachers visited the host school and could
meet the students during some lessons, especially during the workshops they were
carrying out.
2. Presentation of a video about Istanbul by Mrs. Öznur Ünçok, teacher
of English. This video helped us to know the history of the town and also to prepare
the cultural visit to Istanbul.
3. Presentation of a digital activity about ‘LOVE’, preceded of a lovely explanation
by Mrs. Sevim Kinali, teacher at the Turkish school.
4. The Dutch school RSG SLINGERBOS/LEVANT presented an experience about
how to work on universal values through drama. Mrs. Irene showed a student performance
representing, e.g. peace and its opposite, friendship versus hostility… We were surprised
making a stop in the presentations programme to plant trees, one per school, in the
garden of the host school. According to the School Director wish, these trees will
keep permanent memories of the collaboration and friendship among the eight schools
from all over Europe taking part in this meeting. All the participants wish that
the growth of these trees are going to symbolize the cooperation among the schools
taking part in the partnership in the future.
5. Mrs. Emanuela from the Italian school ISTITUTO DI ISTRUZIONE LICEO SCIENTIFICO
E. BALZAN, revived the last meeting showing a video about the workshops and other
activities carried out in Badia Polesine, including the visit to the city of Florencia,
both teachers and students.
6. Mrs Anneli and Mrs Heljia teachers of the Finnish school KAITAAN LUKIO,
presented the activities done by their students about universal values. They encouraged
to visit the renewed school website www.kaitaanlukio.fi, where many other activities can be browsed.
Finally, the work to be done until the next meeting in Sopot, Bulgaria, was commented.
It was also reminded the dates for the meeting: from Wednesday, April 27th (arrival)
to Monday, May 2nd (departure).
The delicious traditional Turkish dinner, prepared at school by the families, was
the perfect note on which to finish a day full of nice and fruitful experiences and
productive work.
Wednesdayy, 16th of February
Cultural trip to visit Sultan Ahmet aerea.
08:30 The bus picked up students and teachers. We visited Sultanahmet Mosque
(better known as the ‘Blue Mosque’), the Islamic Art Museum, Hagia Sofia, Basilica
Cistern, Topkapi Palace and Grand Bazaar. Our teachers guides were Mrs. Safiye and
Mrs. Öznur. Thanks a lot for showing us these awesome places and monuments.
Thursday, 17th of February
Cultural trip to Büyükada
It was worth the climb to enjoy the beautiful views of the Marmara Sea from the highest
point of the island. In the evening, after strolling Istiklal Street, we visited
Galata Tower, the best place to view the city of Istanbul from its four corners.
Thanks to Mrs. Safiye and Mrs. Ayten’s kindness we all spent a very nice day.
Friday, 18th of February.
At 8:00 in the morning we were on the bus toward Istanbul. Before the scheduled
Bosphorus tour we visited Dolmabahçe Palace. It was a guided visit and the
guide’s explanations helped us to understand better the parts of the palace we visited
and the things we were seen in it. It was a sunny and quite warm day, the ideal weather
to enjoy the Bosphorus tour. We had lunch on the boat and even fed the seagulls following
the ship. The views of Istanbul from the sea are stunningly beautiful, especially
the magnificence of Dolmabhçe Palace.
After the Bosphorus tour we visited the Army Museum with the seeing of Mehter Athem.
At 19:30 in the evening was the students’ performance at school. Before the show
prepared by the students, the School Director, the Education Councelor and the Coordinator
of the Proyect ‘Beyond Words’ emphasize the importance of Education and experiences
like this to promote friendship, universal values and Europe. In this Comenius Proyect
schools from all over Europe, which differ in their educational profiles, share experiences
to face the same educational problems. The students’ performance
was very emotive and well prepared. Congratulations to the students and teachers
involved in the show because this moment will be unforgetable.
The subsequent dinner for teachers, with so delicious typical food and music until
late at night, was the perfect atmosphere to say not ‘goodbye’, but ‘see you soon,
friends! |

Arrival at the airport of Venice.
At 18.30 transport from the airport to Badia Polesine. Arrival at Liceo Scientifico
“Balzan” and meeting with the students´ families. Everybody was happy to meet
all the Comenius participants again.
Dinner and accommodation at the hotel “Le Magnolia”.
Tuesday, 28th September.
8:00 Welcome meeting at school and greetings by the Headmaster. General information
about the project meeting. Visit of the school.
9:00 Presentation and evaluation of the work performed by each school during the
first year of the project.
Presentations of didactic units using videos and PowerPoints.
1) Presentation of the KAITAA SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL , FINLAND:
- Photos of their new school building with beautiful pictures.
- Beyond words, idea of the tasks for Finnish students.
- Finnish lifestyle.
2) Presentation of didactic units of the Turkish school, showing the following topics:
- A beautiful Power Point showing the life of Nelson Mandela.
- Wonderful pictures showing the richness and antiquity of Istanbul.
- School projects made by students related to all the participant countries, using
pictures, flags…
3) Presentation by the Italian school of a teaching unit on Rationality. The
teaching unit contains a good number of comments and materials and almost all the
geometric images can be opened and manipulated by means of the software they were
created with.
After that, the evaluation of the first year of Comenius was seen by the participants.

Presentation of some aspects of Florence
Wednesday, 29th September
A day trip to Florence, we saw Palazzo Pitti, la Loggia del Borromini, S. Maria in
fiori and Ponte Vecchio. Florence is a city located in the North of the central Region
of Italy, it is the main economic, artistic, historical site in Toscana. It has got
about 368.901 inhabitants and it’s the city centre of a metropolitan area of a million
and a half inhabitants. It became an important cultural, flourish and financial site
in medieval times with the Dinastia Medici. It was also the capital of Italy from
1865 to 1871 while the Italian Union was taking place. Florence is considered as
the birth of the Art and Architecture, since it’s the place where the Renaissance
was born. In 1982 it was declared as a WORLD HERITAGE CITY.

Thursday, 30th September
8:00 Meeting at school in the Assembly Hall.
Walk to the city centre. We had a warm welcome by the major of Badia at the town
hall. Students were given a key-ring and each school was given a lovely picture of
Badia. After that, there was a ‘Mandala workshop’ in the city centre, it consisted
of drawing things using colour chalk mixed with rice.
Later, we were shown the Abbazia della Vangadizza, which belongs to the 10th century,
a wonderful theatre which is being rebuilt now and a beautiful painting about “The
last dinner”.
Friday, 1st October
Work at school. There was a discussion about the activities to prepare the “Open
Day” that will be celebrated in each school on the 2nd of November.
12.30, am Departure for Ferrara and lunch there.
Ferrara is ancient and lovely city of about 134.967 inhabitants (2009). It is located
on the Po de Volano river. The city has got a urban distribution from XIV century,
when it was ruled by the the ESTE family. The medieval design was projected by Biago
Rosseti and it became the first modern city in Europe, that`s why it was considered
WORLD HERITAGE CITY in 1995. Visit of the ancient town: il Castello, il Duomo, le
mura, S. Romano e vie delle Volte.
19.00 Return to Badia Polesine.
20.00 Dinner at a pizzeria.

Arrivals at the airport of Schiphol. In the evening the participants arrived at Best
Western Hotel Baars, a comfortable hotel located in the centre of the town of Harderwijk.

9:00 Welcome at school RGS Slingerbos/Levant in Harderwijk. General information about
the meeting.
The RSG-Slingerbos / Levant is a secondary school for pupils from 12-18 years
old in the middle of the Netherlands. It is situated in two different locations,
in two cities. One in the polder, in Zeewolde, and the other in Harderwijk, on dry
land.
Zeewolde is a municipality and a town in the Flevoland province in the central
Netherlands. It has a population of approximately 20,000. It is situated in the polder
of Flevoland with the small lake called the Wolderwijd to the east. To the south
is a large deciduous forest called the Horsterwold. The area to the west is principally
agricultural. Zeewolde is known for its landscape and nature art; the most well-known
art work is Sea Level by Richard Serra, located in the Landschapspark De Wetering.

Harderwijk is a municipality and a small city in the eastern Netherlands with
42.000 inhabitants. It lies on what used to be the Zuider Zee shore (Southern Sea,
now the IJsselmeer) and consequently its economy was strongly based on fishing and
seafaring in general. This dramatically changed after 1932, when the Zuiderzee was
cut off from the North Sea for safety reasons. Because of this, there are few fishing
boats remaining in the harbour these days, which is now mainly home to yachts.

The guided tour let us know the daily school life, and meet the teachers and the
students in their classrooms while they were giving lessons on different subjects.
10:00 Presentation of the work done.
All schools involved in the Comenius project, according to what has been scheduled,
presented the new work done since the meeting in Constanta, especially the materials
concerning to the teaching units, giving a copy of them to each school to facilitate
understanding and following the work done, and also to share the materials produced.
Doing so, Spain presented a new unit about the topic of Happiness and the
exhibitions and workshops to celebrate the Day of Europe. Italy also presented
a unit about Happiness and some materials about ‘mandalas’. Holland made a
presentation about Elos (Europe as a learning environment at school) by the coordinator
of internationalisation Irene Groen. Elos is an educational concept which seeks to
promote the European and international dimension in education. It is about preparing
young people for a future in a society in which European integration and globalization
are a reality. Elos is about students developing ‘Europe competence’: being willing
and able to act as an active citizen in a European and wider international context.
It is also about schools integrating this approach in their curriculum and school
policies, and collaborating with partner schools and organizations abroad to develop
a truly European learning environment.
12:30 Lunch at school.
13:30 New presentations about the work done until now.
The Romanian school showed the most important moments in the project and
also the workshops to celebrate the Day of Europe. Finland presented a teaching
unit about religion in Finland called ‘Church architecture as a mirror of the Finnish
soul and identity from the Middle Ages until these days’. Bulgaria showed
‘young comments about Romania and Netherlands’. In the answers we realised that Bulgarian
students were well informed about both nations, and also enjoyed their spontaneous
and sometimes imaginative answers. The Bulgarian school also presented a teaching
unit about happiness. Greece showed the work done about the Aegean civilization,
pointing out the frescoes painted in a classroom and the unit about the topic ‘The
emergence of universal values through the study of the Cycladic and the Minoan civilizations’.
Turkey presented the activities carried out to celebrate the Day of Europe
at school.
16:00 Sightseeing in the historical centre of Harderwijk.
The coordinator of the project in Holland, Irene Groen, was our guide during
the visit to the city. We enjoyed walking along the streets and quiet alleys, watching
the calm water of the harbour and the well-preserved wall of this Hansa town.
Friday, June 25, 2010
9:00 Meeting at school in Zeewolde.
We made a nice bicycletour to get at school in Zeewolde: lake, polder, woods
including transfer by ferry. Cycling to Levant school was a marvellous experience,
even a challenge for some of us after many years without cycling.
Discussion about the partnership’s magazine/newspaper.
Some copies of the partnership’s newspaper were given to each school and also
a file in PDF format to make more copies. The newspaper contains articles of each
school in English and also in its own language.

Questions and answers about the Comenius Project Report for the European Platform
to be sent before the 30th of June 2010.
The coordinator of the project clarified the doubts presented about it and commented
the Report sent by his school.

A few days before the meeting in Harderwijk, the coordinator of the project had
sent a document to evaluate the work done during the first year of the project. The
coordinator presented a compilation of the results of this survey to the partners.
We all agreed that an excellent work have been done: presentations to get to know
each others, activities to publicise the project, leaflets, posters, brochures, celebration
of the day of Europe, meetings in Finland, Greece, Romania and Netherlands, students’
exchanges between some schools, workshops, teaching units about universal values,
and the website and partnership’s newspaper.
We also agreed that the communication among the students involved in the project
needs to be improved. For the next year we will concentrate on this point.
Finally, the coordinator of the project made these proposals:
- Each school must do a compilation of the work done on a CD/DVD and take a copy
to the meeting in Italy to give to the coordinator of the project. This is necessary
to elaborate the final product of the partnership.
- To facilitate the compilation of the materials, the files shouldn’t be no more
than 10 Mb. It would be better some small files about a matter than a large one.
- Making the files containing the activities, materials and so on… preferably in
WORD, PDF and PPS (Power Point) and the videos in AVI, MPEG or WMV format. These
files are easy to upload on the web and also to be compiled.
- If the files are not short and easy to handle it will be difficult to upload them
on the website.
- About the meeting in Italy, it would be useful to intend to arrive at the same
aiport and at the same time to organise the journey to Badia Polesine in group.
- PLEASE, PAY ATTENTION TO THESE SUGGESTIONS.
As coordinator of the project, I must congratulate all participants, teachers
and students, for the work done and also for being so enthusiastic and creating so
good atmosphere during the meetings. Thanks to everybody for your cooperation and
help.
20:00 Dinner together.
Irene was so nice inviting all of us to a barbecue in her beautiful garden enjoying
traditional Dutch things to eat. There was a very good atmosphere among all participants,
and the warm weather helped to spend a wonderful evening.

Arrivals in Bucharest; Transfer from Otopeni Airport 20:00 - 20:30
Arrival at Colegiul National Pedagogic in Constanta & meeting with the host families.
All participants who arrived in Romania by plane had decided to travel together
to Constanta, patiently we waited for each other. Around 20:30 we left the airport
to arrive in Constanta late at night. Romanian teachers and families were at school
to welcome us. Everybody was happy to meet old friends again.

Welcoming at College (teachers and students).
TEACHERS: General information about the meeting; College presentation; Antique &
modern Constanta city; Romanian educational system- short presentation; Presentation,
evaluation and compilation of the work done so far. Discussions about the work done
in the project by each school (teaching units on the topics about universal values
chosen by each school).
Foreign STUDENTS attend classes with the host students (according to hosts' timetable,
either in the morning or in the afternoon).
CNP Constantin Bratescu, a building more than a hundred years old, is beautiful and
monumental. The homemade flags of all the countries making up the Comenius partnership,
were flying over the main entrance of the school. This was a detail we liked a lot.
We were welcome by Anamaria Ciobotaru, school’s headteacher; by Polixenia Popescu,
project’s coordinator at school; by Cristina Gila and other teachers and students.
Thank you for the traditional Romanian welcoming.
The guided tour let us know the daily school life, and meet the teachers and the
students in their classrooms while they were giving lessons on different subjects.
Andra Moise and Doina Caresson, teachers, presented the Romanian educational system;
their clear explanations and pictures helped us to know it.
After this, all the schools involved in the Comenius project, according to what has
been scheduled, presented the new work done since the meeting in Thessaloniki, especially
the materials concerning to the teaching units, giving a copy of them to each school
to facilitate understanding and following the work done, and also to share the materials
produced. I would also like to mention the presentation of the materials each school
had prepared for the workshops the students were going to work on. The topic, suggested
for the host school, was ‘The Shapes and Symbols among the centuries in my homeland’.
As general coordinator, I must congratulate everybody for the interesting and motivating
activities produced for the workshops.
We also used the work session to reflect on the developing of the project and to
evaluate the work done until the present time. My personal opinion is that now everybody
has clearer ideas regarding how to elaborate the teaching units about the universal
values.

Morning: Teachers and students: Tour in Constanta city.
Afternoon: Teachers: Tasks for the next project meeting; proposals to celebrate Europe's
Day; ideas for the partnership's magazine/newspaper, as the first issue will be released
in June before the meeting in the Netherlands.
Afternoon: Students: Workshop: "The Shapes and Symbols among the centuries
in my homeland"
Evening: Teachers, students and parents: Romanian evening and hosts’ surprises.
In the morning we had a guided tour in Constanta. We visited the ‘Muzeul Marinei
Romane’, the ‘Muzeul de Istorie Nationala si Arheologie’ and some other interesting
places such as the Archeological Park. We have also planned to visit the Orthodox
Cathedral, the Mosque and The Casino close to the Black Sea, but there was no time.
Visiting Constanta we learnt that this the second most important city in Romania
from the economic point of view, as well as the number of inhabitants. We also learnt
this is a multimillenary city, founded under the name of Tomis by the Greek colonists
coming from Milet, and that nowadays has become the most important harbour at the
Black Sea, and the sixth European harbour as size and volume of transited commercial
merchandise. We could appreciate Constanta is a city with important historical monuments,
museums and churches that is worth to visit.
In the afternoon, teachers discussed about the contents and contributions for the
partnership’s magazine/newspaper, which first issue will be released in June. We
agreed to send the contributions non later than the 31st of May to the coordinator
in Spain. We discussed how to celebrate the Europe Day as well, and suggestions and
concrete proposals were made about it: exhibitions, workshops, worksheets and lectures
at each school.
The general coordinator also talked about the size and the kind of format of the
digital files used to send the materials by the Internet.
It is important to remember and follow this advices to facilitate the compilation
of the materials produced by the partnership:
- The PREFERABLE format of the files: Word, PDF, PPS (PowerPoint), AVI, MPEG or WMV.
If other file, please tell me in advance, to have the necessary programme on the
computer to open it.
- The size of the file: No more than 10 Mb. Better two short files than a large one
to be uploaded on the Internet.
Meantime teachers were working on the Comenius project, students had activities on
the workshop "The Shapes and Symbols among the Centuries in my homeland".
First the students saw the PowerPoints presentations prepared by each school, and
then made some activities related to the topic. The students told me they have enjoyed
and learnt many things with the workshops' activities. I am sorry because I missed
the workshops; at that time teachers were met working on other matters of the project.
According to the schedule of the project, these are the activities to be done until
the meeting in Harderwijk, in the Netherlands.

the chosen topics. Review and evaluation of the teaching units done until the present.

In the evening we were surprised with a theatre-evening by the Romanian students.
They sang and danced traditional music, even in our own languages! Sincere congratulations
to all the boys and girls who took part and, of course to the teachers, because altogether
managed to prepare such a talented performance. The traditional Romanian things to
eat afterwards, was really a new surprise.

Teachers and students: Cultural Dobrudja - excursion
Early in the morning, at 7:30, everybody was at school to take the coach to go
to Tulcea. It was a trip to visit the Danube’s Delta. First we visited the "Centrul
Ecoturistic Delta Dunarii', a modern building you can miss visiting to be well informed
about wild life in the delta.
At mid-morning we took a boat to go round the Danube river. The weather was nice,
even timidly sunny. The long trip on the boat was wonderful. Chatting with friends
all day long was especially enjoyable. What can I say about this romantic river when
everything seems to have been said? Better nothing, I would not like to spoil the
personal impressions the river gives to everyone. The Danube is a gift of nature
for all those countries the river is going through.

For students it was a family day. We teachers were visiting the town and shopping.
The farewell dinner in a Romanian traditional restaurant with so good atmosphere,
music and things to eat was a wonderful end.
At the end of the evening, the sadness of saying goodbye was mixed with the hope
of meeting again soon in Harderwijk, the Netherlands.
We did not know yet, the unexpected Comenius adventure that awaited us the next day.

APPENDIX
A PERSONAL EXPLANATION OF WHAT A TEACHING UNIT IS.
A teaching unit or didactic unit was traditionally called lesson. Well, there are
some differences between a teaching unit and a traditional lesson. Traditional lessons
were made up by contents and activities. Theoretically speaking didactic or teaching
units are made up by several elements or parts:
Title - Rationale - Goals/Objectives - Contents
- Methodology - Activities - Resources - Timing - Evaluation
In my opinion, in our didactic units we should focus only on these elements: title, contents
and activities.
Other important elements: rationale, goals or objectives were already
designed in the project and they were proposed considering the specific units
we were to prepare. I mean they are valid for all the units because, according to
the project, they will form a whole, a set.
Page 12 of the project: All
the work performed will form a whole; still it will be structured in didactic units,
the contents of which will be the different artistic expressions that convey the
proposed concept, idea or value.
The other elements: methodology,
resources, timing and evaluation are important, of course, but not to the point
of being necessary to be specified in a project so large as our project. Those
elements can be determined at the moment of working on the unit in an specific class
by each teacher.

Issues proposed in the schedule of the 2nd meeting.
JANUARY 21ST - THURSDAY
- Official welcoming at school: information about the host school and guided tour.
It was a great honour for the partnership to be welcomed by the Mayor of Efkarpias.
Thank you very much for his hospitality and friendly words.
Mr. Nikolaos Samarinas, headmaster of GYMNASIO EFKARPIAS, after welcoming the participants,
wished everybody success in the work and to enjoy the stay in Thessaloniki. His kind
and motivating words were the best way to open the meeting and also helped to make
us feel at home.
The guided tour let us know the daily school life, and meet the teachers and
the students in their classrooms while they were giving lessons on different subjects.
Greek pupils took the opportunity to show their skills in foreign languages greeting
the participant teachers.
- Presentation of the Greek educational system.
The presentation of the Greek educational system enabled us to know it, and its explanation
facilitated us to understand the education in Greece.
To know the educational system of other European country is always an interesting
experience to reflect on the topic of education: its challenges and solutions.
- Presentation of the Greek team’s work.
After the presentation we all realized that the Greek team had done an excellent
work about the communication of universal values through art works. The contents
and activities of the didactic unit about the universal value "joy of life"
were very well prepared and designed, and we perceived the high level of the
students’ involvement. The students gave us a piece of work they themselves had made.
Thanks for this beautiful art work.
- Surprises from the Greek students.
We enjoyed a lot with the typical dances some schoolgirls performed, and also
with the songs some students played. We all loved the dances and the songs. The song
"Equality", written and composed by Jannis Stratos and Antonis Ezanidis
for this project, and performed by the school’s musical group "Every Fear"
was the great ending of a marvellous performance: an unforgettable surprise.
- Presentation of the work done by now by all the other schools.
The participant schools had many activities to present regarding to the work
done and they were eager to show them, but unfortunately there was not much time
and each school had to make a selection of the materials they had prepared. We all
have the Cds given by each school to view quietly at home the compilation of the
work done.
JANUARY 22nd - FRIDAY
- Evaluation of the work done by now.
The Turkish school explained and presented the work they have done by now because
there was not time to do it the day before.
Then the coordinator school, IESO QUERCUS, made an assessment of the work done by
his school:
- Encouraging students to exchange e-mails.
- Creating, running and updating the partnership’s website. http://e-quercus.es/comenius/
- Producing materials: posters, leaflets, brochures and digital files (Power Points
and PDF).
a) Posters and leaflets to publicize the project.
b) Brochures to inform about the school, the town and the province. (PDF format)
c) Power Points to complete the information given in the brochures.
d) Power Points to present and summarize in images the meeting in Espoo and to wish
Merry Christmas and Seasonal Greetings to the Partnership.
All these materials are uploaded in the website and some of them can be printed.
Finally, the coordinator school made a short evaluation of the work done by his school
summarized in these points:
- For some teachers is difficult to follow the project because they cannot speak
English. But on the other hand they are motivated to learn English and the project
is a challenge to do it.
- Lack of time to produce materials and coordinate the work during the school time.
It is often necessary to spend extra time, even at home.
But despite this, we consider the experience of participating in the project and
the work done very positive, educative and pleasant. The best: the opportunity to
meet teachers and students so enthusiastic and share ideas, activities and experiences
with all of them, contributing to disseminate the idea of the European citizenship.
- Planning and organizing new tasks until the next meeting.
According to the schedule of the project these are the activities to be done
until the meeting in Constanta, Romania:
01-Feb-10 - Starting to design teaching units on the topics about universal values
chosen by each school. This work will continue until the end of the project, combining
it with the other scheduled tasks.
01-March-10 - Creating a blog of the partnership.
01-Apr-10 - Reviewing, organizing and evaluating the work done so far in each school.
Sending the results to the coordinator to be compiled.
The most important task in the future will be to produce teaching units about universal
values using as contents the art works of the culture of each country. In the next
meeting, each school should present the work they are doing about one teaching unit.
It is not necessary to present a finished unit, but at least to explain how the school
is working on this matter and the topics they will study.
At the end of the project each school must have done between 5 and 10 units. The
topic of the units will be some of the universal values: peace, solidarity, brotherhood,
equality, dialogue, friendship, freedom, justice, happiness... or any of human rights
(review the page 12 of the project).
AGREEMENTS:
I remind all of you to write a short evaluation or opinion about the work
done by now, but only of your own school, I mean each partner has to make the
report only of his/her school, and please send to me. We did not have time to do
this in the meeting, and we agreed to send it to the coordinator by email.
- I also ask you the email address of all the teachers involved in the project.
I would like to send some information, not only to the coordinator in each school,
but also to them.
- We also agreed to do our best in order to encourage our students to exchange
emails among them. The specific agreement was to motivate our students and ensure
that all the students will receive at least two emails from each school.
- I also remind you that in the next meeting each school should present the work
they are doing about the teaching unit (also called didactic unit or lesson).
It is not necessary to present a finished unit, but at least to explain how you are
working on this matter.
- Guided tour of Thessaloniki (visit to the Upper Old Town, St. Dimitrios Church,
the Byzantine Museam and the White Tower).
Before lunch time we had a guided tour. We visited the Upper Old Town and enjoyed
with wonderful views of Thessaloniki. St. Dimitrios Church is a very old church and
it is worth to visit the crypt.
Instead of the Byzantine Museum we visited the Archaeological Museum. It houses finds
from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, mostly from the city
of Thessaloniki but also from the region of Macedonia in general.
The museum is housed in a building designed by the architect Patroklos Karantinos
and is a sample of the modern architectural trends of Greece.
JANUARY 23RD - SATURDAY
- Visit to Vergina (the capital of ancient Macedonia)
Vergina is a small town in northern Greece, about 80 km. south-west of Thessaloniki,
the capital of Greek Macedonia. The town became internationally famous in 1977, when
the Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos unearthed what he claimed was the burial
site of the kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander
the Great. We visited the Ancient Cemetery of Aegae Royal Tombs in Vergina and were
very impressed by the finds and treasures exhibited in the museum.

Presentation of each partner
school.
Comment: The presentation of the schools was made in several sessions. The
teachers presented their institutions, towns and countries to the partnership. The
presentations were original, amusing and motivating to know each other.
General agreements about the proposed strategies, objectives and methodology for
the next two years. (pages 12, 15, and 16 of the project)
Comment: There was no discussion about this point. I should understand that there
is not disagreement on these issue, and that the strategies, objectives and methodology
of the project are clear for everybody.
Presentation of ideas given by the teachers and the students of the participating
countries.
Comment: In this point some schools suggested specific activities to be done.
All the ideas and activities that could be integrated in the project are welcome,
but only the tasks specifically proposed in the project are obligatory for all the
partners. I encourage everybody to collaborate in the new activities proposed
by any of the partners, but it should be understood that, if they are not written
in the project it is not obligatory, and the schools will collaborate according to
their possibilities and available time.
In short: The schools may suggest to perform new activities in addition to those
written in the project, but they are not obligatory for the partnership. If any school
want to do an extra activity, of course can be asked the cooperation of the partnership,
surely there will be schools ready to collaborate.
The activities proposed in the project are in the pages 30, 31 and 32, and the
coordinator will remember the activities to be done every month.
Review of the work done until the moment.
The work to be done until the meeting in Espoo was sent by email under the title
of: PROPOSAL OF WORK
From 15th of September to 15th of October:
DATA EXCHANGE AND ACTIVITIES TO KNOW EACH OTHER.
- Email-contact among the pupils from the participating countries to get to know
each other
Each school must send a list with the email addresses of the pupils involved in the
project to the other schools so that the pupils could exchange messages. If they
have ‘messenger’ they could also chat among them. The idea is that the students of
every school exchange messages with all the other schools.
- To produce digital files, for instance a PowerPoint or some PowerPoints to show
to the other countries the own school, the town, the surrounded area...
These presentations can be made by students and teachers. When they are finished,
send the files by the Internet to the other countries.
- To produce a DVD compiling these presentations in English for all partners.
This DVD could be use in the presentation of each school during the project meeting.
Looking at each other’ DVDs will help to know each other. In the first project meeting
every school should give a copy of its own DVD to the other schools. Later I will
find the way of producing a larger DVD with all the presentations, and this DVD will
be one of the final products of the partnership.
From 16th to the 31st of October
- To design and print a brochure (poster, leaflet... ) to publicize the project.
Every school should design a brochure (poster, leaflet... ) to give publicity of
the project in the school, in the local community... A copy of the brochure will
be give to the other schools in the first meeting.
Comment: It is necessary to finish the work proposed to be done until the meeting
in Spoo before Christmas. I mean:
1. To send a list with the email addresses of the pupils involved in the project
to the other schools so that the pupils could exchange messages. (Till the moment
only Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Spain have sent the list)
2. To produce digital files, for instance a PowerPoint or some PowerPoints to show
the other countries the own school, the town, the surrounded area... (I need a copy
of these presentations to upload them in the website of the partnership and also
to compile all of them in a DVD or CD)
3. To design and print a brochure to publicize the project. (It could be a poster,
some kind of leaflet... and send the file to the coordinator by the Internet to be
uploaded in the website)
In short, each school should send a file of the presentation and also a file of the
poster, leaflet, brochure... to the coordinator to be uploaded in the website before
Christmas, and also to send a list of the students’ emails, but this as soon as possible.
Solving and clarifying specific problems and doubts. Agreements on the contents
and activities within the project. Distribution of tasks and planning of works.
Comment: I have tried to solve the doubts some partners had about some sections
of the project, mainly in informal conversations. Anyway I suggest to review the
page 17 of the project, and if you have any doubt, let me know.
Organising cooperation and communication between the schools.
Comment: This point wasn’t discussed. I suggest to review the page 18 and
19 of the project and if you have doubts, let me know.
Presentation of the partnership’s website.
Comment: The website address is http://e-quercus.es/comenius/
Agreements on pupils´ involvement. Presentation of the strategies of integration
of the project into learning and other ongoing activities in every school.
Comment: I suggest to review the pages 22 and 23 of the project. Each
school is free to decide how and how many students are involved. On the other hand,
concerning to the integration of the project in the curriculum of the school, in
Spain this is strongly demanded by the educational authorities, and according to
this, the activities of the project are integrated in some areas of the curriculum:
history, art, music, computer, ethics, modern languages… but not in all the countries
is in this way.
Review of the strategies of dissemination and use of the results, experiences
and products to be done by the partnership.
Comment: This point was not discussed, but I suggest to review the page 24
of the project and if there is any doubt, let me know.
