True
to the spirit of our secondary education institution "Adaja" in Arévalo,
and its |
concern in the field of progressive education with
special emphasis on social values, this year we have set out on a new pedagogical
venture, our Project for Educational Innovation. Its motto can be found in the heading
of the home page. The aim of the project is mainly to reflect over the actual existence
of equality between men and women.
The scope of the project, and the practical application of this line of thought is
coeducation. This term attempts to encompass the process of affirmative action through
which, the development of boys and girls, in our case teenagers, is enhanced. The
social entity and self-awareness of both sexes is aimed at the moral advancement
of the individual, together with the establishment of a social dynamics which will
tend to look for common ground rather than create antagonism. The coeducational model
purports the undoing of such stereotypes, hierarchies, social roles or artificial
gender differences which arise during the educational process.
We have started by drawing up these posterboards, which you have surely seen on high
school premises, featuring the faces of women with a big question mark on top, Do
you know who this is? We just wanted you to think about the fact that we recognize
the faces of artists, sporting heroes, politicians, scientists... but what about
the names that match the faces of those women that have been awarded prizes in the
fields of literature, medicine, physics or chemistry? Not only do we not recognize
them, but we also fail to acknowledge their existence. And, as you can readily apprehend
there are quite a few women that have received the Nobel Prize, the "Príncipe
de Asturias", or the "Planeta" for literature, and many other prizes...
Here they are, in these posters, because these individuals of whom we only recall
their faces and names have made decisive contributions to the development of the
sciences, and the technical, cultural and social advancement of the societies of
all times, through their investigations, written works, attitudes and ethical involvement.
For all of which neither them nor their achievements must sink into oblivion.
Our goal? We will have to decide as we go along, working together during this academic
year. Our wish? that equality which has been codified in the Human Rights Declaration
and the Constitution shall have its own space, our website, which will make the concept
as real and down to earth as possible. We are open to any suggestions or contributions. |
