JOOS van Cleve Pintor Flamenco (n. 1485, Amberes, m. 1540, Amberes) Biografía Joos van Cleve (Joose van der Beke) pintor holandés, nacído posiblemente en Cleves en el bajo Rin y activo principalmente en Amberes donde llegó ha ser maestro de pintores en 1511. Se le identifica como el maestro que pintó "La muerte de la Virgen". Fué decano del gremio de pintores en 1515 y 1525 y es uno de los pintores de Amberes mas productivo de su tiempo, a pesar de que su carrera no nos haya quedado muy definida. Hay un cierto sabor a Leonardo en algunos de sus trabajos y es muy posible que visitara Italia. El desapasionado realismo de sus retratos se deja influenciar en cierto sentido por Quentin Massys, aunque amplias diferencias estilísticas son percibidas en su trabajo como conjunto. Con total seguridad trabajó en Francia y hay algunos retratos de Francisco I y su esposa que se le atribuyen, del mismo modo que un retrato de Enrique VIII de Inglaterra (Coleccion Real, Windsor). Colaboró con Joachim Patenier: "Un descanso en la huida a Egipto" (Museo Real, Bruselas) es posiblemente un trabajo compartido. El hijo de Joos, Cornelis vari Cleve (1520-67) fué también pintor. Se le conocía como "Sotte Cleve" (El loco Cleve) tras perder la razón en 1554 como consecuencia de no lograr el cargo de pintor de la Corte de Felipe II de España. JOOS van Cleve Flemish painter (b. 1485, Antwerpen, d. 1540, Antwerpen Biography Joos van Cleve (Joose van der Beke) Netherlandish painter, born presumably at Cleves in the lower Rhine region and active mainly in Antwerp, where he became a master painter in 1511. He is identified with the Master of the Death of the Virgin. He was dean of the painters' guild in 1515 and 1525 and seems to have been one of the most productive Antwerp painters of his time, but his career is illdefined. There is a flavour of Leonardo in some of his works, and he may have visited Italy. The dispassionate realism of his portraits owes something to the influence of Quentin Massys, but wide stylistic differences are apparent in his work as a whole. Almost certainly he worked in France and there are several portraits of Francis I and his wife attributed to him, as is a portrait of Henry VIII of England (Royal Collection, Windsor). He collaborated with Joachim Patenier: a Rest on the Flight into Egypt (Musées Royaux, Brussels) is possibly a joint work. Joos's son, Cornelis vari Cleve (1520-67), was also a paínter. He was known as 'Sotte Cleve' (Mad Cleve) after becoming insane in 1554 - a result of failing to win the post of Court Painter to Philip II of Spain.
